You
probably know by now that Sebadoh has been a major musical influence
on an entire generation of young people-fans Spin once referred
to as "fanzine reading misfits who never got to slow kiss to
Bread at the the high school gym dance." You probably also
know that Lou Barlow, founding member of Sebadoh, is also one half
of Folk Impression.
What you may
not know is that Sebadoh has a new drummer, Russ Pollard. And whether
it's thanks to Russ or just thanks to getting a little older and
wiser, The Sebadoh finds Lou, Jason Lowenstein and their new bandmate
operating more like a singular creative unit then ever before-something
that Lou, for one, finds refreshing. "I feel like I've never
been in a band before," he says exitedly, when discussing the
froup dynamics and shared creative imput. "We always just gave
each other so much room before, that it almost felt like we were
making solo records under a band name.
"Break
Free," in fact, is the first song Russ ever recorded in a studio,
which just goes to show what can happen when three people work really
hard to develop a dynamic based on friendship, honesty, and trust.
"We're really close now," chuckled Lou, noting that the
bandmates-who live in separate parts of the country-speak to each
other on the phone nearly everyday.
In one of the
songs, "Tree," Sebadoh invites us to "See how we've
grown." See it. Hear it. Feel it.

- "Barlow
sounds like a young Jonathan Richman stepping up to the mike to
say that all he wants out of life is a girlfriend
Lou,
Jason, and Bob are simultaneously edgy and melodic."
-Scott Anderson, Request
- "
Sebadoh
essentially invented lo-fi, the sod rock of punk."
-Ann Powers, Spin
- "Having
shed so many skins, today's Sebadoh is a leaner but not entirely
new animal, the trio continues to play perfectly crafted, honest,
impassioned songs about love and hate."
-The New Yorker
- "Like
so few of their fellow home-tapers in the lo-fi indieground, Sebadoh
understand the value of a cunningly shaped song."
-Details
- "Indie
heartthrobs in Sebadoh are back with a great new LP."
-Rob Kemp, Time Out NY
